POLICY ON HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH AND THE

INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD (IRB)

Policy on research involving human subjects is governed by federal regulations that also mandate the existence and functions of the University's Institutional Review Board (IRB). The IRB has oversight of all research involving human subjects, regardless of the funding source, conducted at the UConn Storrs campus and the 5 regional campuses.

Under this policy, all UConn investigators, whether faculty or student, doing research with human subjects, must submit a protocol to the IRB for review. The policy applies to research done, both, on and off campus.

Specifically, this policy is based on:

The Code of Federal Regulations, Title 45, Part 46, Protection of Human Subjects, http://ohrp.osophs.dhhs.gov/humansubjects/guidance.45cfr46.htm.

The Belmont Report, http://ohrp.osophs.dhhs.gov/humansubjects/guidance/belmont.htm.
